I was
born in June 1970 in Essex and have moved all of about 10 miles away
in this time, now currently residing in Purfleet.
Having left school following my A levels in 1988, I decided to throw
my efforts into the new and exciting sport of triathlon, a sport that
I had dabbled with since 1987. Formerly a County Level swimmer with
Romford Town S.C. I started to make the transition into a triathlete.
Having won a National Age Group gold medal at the British Junior Championships
in 1987 I soon began to progress into the senior ranks.
By 1989 I had made my first G.B. Junior International triathlon in
Geneva, Switzerland. Over the next 8 years I dedicated my time into
becoming the best I could manage. During this time I have picked up
3 senior British Championships medals (2 silver, 1 bronze) and won
the British Grand Prix Series outright for 3 consecutive years ('92-'94).
I have also represented Great Britain on over a dozen occasions at
European and World Championships to date.
My work has also evolved over this period. In 1990 I undertook a Sports
Massage course with the London School of Sports Massage. One year later
I had passed with Honours! After 4 years working locally with local
sportsmen/women, I was introduced to Cannons Health Club in 1995 and
soon began working 1 day per week at their flagship City Club and later
that year at the Covent Garden Cannons also, within the Physiotherapy/Sports
Injury Clinic.
In 1995 I passed a YMCA Fitness Trainer qualification and soon started
combining some Gym Instruction work at Cannons into my routine.
By 1997, I was winding down my triathlon exploits when my performance
had plateaued out. I chose to enrol myself onto two 1 year college
courses in Graphic Design, during which time I achieved a lot of personal
goals. Upon finishing college, I have undertaken an amount of freelance
graphic design work (mainly for friends and their contacts). I was
also fortunate enough to have been awarded the job of designing the
layout for Trinews, which is the official bi-monthly magazine for the
British Triathlon Association. This was an ideal foothold for me to
implement my new found college skills. I have also enjoyed writing
the odd training article or race report for Trinews, 220 and Triathlete
magazines over past
years.
Spinning (studio cycling) replaced my gym instruction at Cannons from
2000, having qualified with Schwinn in 1999. I taught Spinning at Cannons
and Holmes Place(2-5 classes a week) for 5 years until September 2004,
but have now chosen to spend more time concentrating on my massage
work solely these days.
My future ambitions include developing my massage portfolio and trying
to get involved with working for teams/individuals at international
events (especially athletics and triathlon) with a long term goal of
being involved as part of the support team at the London 2012 Olympic
Games. I'd also like to learn some new therapies over the next few
years to build on the portfolio of what I already do. I will also be
providing the official massage to the GB Age Group triathlon team
at the World
Long Distance championships in Lorient, France in July.
For my art. I am trying to utilise and develop my interests and graphic
design skills to produce illustrative physique work, using as mediums,
amongst other things, acrylic and stainless steel for presentation
(www.muscleart.co.uk). Time
will tell how this develops? ...watch this space!
As for my sport, well for the past 4 years the Ironman Triathlon has
taken up all my free time and racing interests. In 2007, the Austria
Ironman was my 7th Ironman event! Id like to do more marathons
and ironman races in the future, but there never seems enough time
in the week to train, race, work and have at least some social life
all at the same time! Sometimes it can leave you feeling constantly
harassed, run down and under pressure to keep up! I have also had more
than my fair share of injuries since 2003 (maybe an age thing?!) so
I have to consider how clever continuing with Ironman racing is? The
desire is there to race for years to come, but I will take things one
year at a time and see what my heart/head is telling me!
Once again, watch this space...
